The return of the Saturday six!

The busy part of my year is starting to end, so you know what that means! The Friday Five will be back along with my reviews! I have been saying that for a while, but I seriously have about five album reviews to finish and upload. Speaking of upload, I was going to upload this edition of the Friday Five yesterday night, but the embed code isn't working on my videos (I'm still working on it, but I can fix it soon. Anyway, enjoy!

St Vincent - Cruel. I love this song, and this video. Well, I like all of St. Vincents videos anyway, they capture the spirit of the song quite well.

Nite Jewel - Natural Causes. I like this "retro revival sound". I've been hearing it a lot recently. I just hope it doesn't grow out of control. This is a pretty good track, but it ends very abruptly (almost too abruptly for my taste).

Blouse - They Always Fly Away. Here is an example of " retro shoegaze revival" (in case you can't tell, I totally just made that up). But on a serious note, I really enjoy listening to Blouse.

Warpaint - Warpaint. This one is acoustic! Nifty!

Extra! Warpaint - Undertow. Here is another acoustic one. Oooh, they changed up the guitar riff a little.

Happy Friday! I had the day off today, and I did what I do best; I spent the day crawling though youtube trying to find the best new and intresting videos for my weekly collection of awesomeness! I have some new stuff, I have some old stuff, but just be happy that the Friday Five is back on regular schedule!

Warpaint - Jubilee. I read in this article that this was going to be on the newest album (I guess it was a leftover song?). Anyway, I hope this makes the cut onto the newest one because this song is great!

Beach House - Norway. This is from the Pitchfork Practice sesion. (Yeah, I know...). Why is everything so fuzzy?

Scout Niblett - Dinosaur Egg. This isn't your ordinary song about dinosoar eggs. This is an awesome song about dinosaur eggs! This really sounds great near the end.

The Summer Playlist Part One

I was kind of tired from final exams last week to post, but I thought that this week would be a good time because it is now officially my summer vacation! Rollercoaster @ Coachella '06. Carries intro thing was great, why did they just start the song? Anyway, if you really listen at :55 - 1:44 Were they trying to tune this song down? (I doubt it...) but the rest of the song is good.


Sympathy @ Coachella '06. This is the next song. Why did they have to play a sad song after a good one? Oh well (I'm not dissing their choice though). Anyway, looks like they fixed the drum set right in time... (This might be me, but they all look equally pissed while playing this song...)

Friday Five: Rapture Playlist Edition.

Happy Friday everyone! I have swollen tonsils so I can't really do as much as I want to do, but I still made time for the Friday Five this week. This time around, I'm posting some songs from my appropriately titled "Rapture Playlist".

Blondie - Rapture. You know...Just in case the Rapture *Really* happens this weekend...(Yes,I know the whole rap).


Sonic Youth - Kissability Live in Amsterdam 1989. This is an AWESOME set. I want to watch the rest of it if I can find it. I'm like the Church that they are playing in.


Extra! Sonic Youth - Silver Rocket Live in Amsterdam 1989. If you listen carefully, you can hear a lyric change.


Warpaint - Elephants Later with Jools Holland. This aired on the 13th of May, so its somewhat new. I think that this is a better version than the one from Coachella that I posted not too long ago, and I still think that it is better than the album version! (Hey, is Stella dressed like a droog? Anyway, she is killing it on the Drums).


Extra! Warpaint - Undertow Live on Later with Jools Holland. This one was a bummer because it feels a little rushed. If you want a good live version, then just watch the Coachella set (its 2 extra minutes and it has an awesome drum solo!). (P.S. If you like Warpaint, Check out my album review for The Fool. I will have another Warpaint review up soon)

First Impressions of Wild Flag

As you might or might know from reading my blog, I'm a Sleater-Kinney fanatic. I have all the albums, I have some on vinyl, I have a signed poster, I have some b-sides, I've seen hours of live footage; I know what I'm talking about.

Its hard for me to boil Wild Flag down to 5 points, but I had to put the limit someplace right?

1.Wild Flag is not Sleater-Kinney, so don't compare them.
This is going to be hard for me not to do. Simply put it is hard  to find the adjectives to describe Wild Flag! They have 2 of the 3 members from Sleater-Kinney, so the drumming style and guitar work sound "almost" the same. Every other element is diffrent. If you are a Sleater-Kinney fan, you will have a hard time transitioning into Wild Flag's musical style. Don't worry though, you will get used to it after 10 or so listens.

2.Wild Flag is not a studio band.
Alright, I admit it, I haven't seen Wild Flag live (But they are playing on my Birthday in New York with Sonic Youth), but I have seen the live bootleg videos (If you want to see some of them, look at past Friday Fives). Wild Flag is not one of those bands that just play studio based music. Wild Flag is all about the live performances. I've seen some pretty crazy live shows, but I haven't seen anything that is quite like Wild Flag. They are interesting, they are new, and I also think that they will get better with time (If they keep releasing albums).

3.Wild Flag is here to rock, and they will.
This is similar to the last point, but I truly believe that Wild Flag can keep pressing out the album releases if they want to. The good thing about Wild Flag is that all of their members have experience playing music, and playing in bands. Everyone knows what they are doing, and all of the members know how to keep a band going, (insert Sleater-Kinney rebuttals here if you want to.) But despite that, I'm willing to say that Wild Flag may be the main musical vehicle of all of the members in Wild Flag, and we could just drop all hopes of a *Reunion* tour (alright, I'm almost done with these inside jokes).

4.Wild Flag is a game changer.
Although I'm not that old, I can say that I haven't been this excited for any band to release an album in my life time. It is nice to see musicians that I've looked up to for a while finally getting into a project that can possibly change the history of music as we know it. Although they are not the first all female super group (Free Kitten was first in 1992), they are the first female super group that has gotten positive press in independent media. If that isn't a game changer, then I don't know what is.

5.Wild Flag is noting like you've ever experienced.
What else can I say? This is going to be hard for me not to do. Simply put it is hard to just describe Wild Flag! They describe themselves as a mixture between a "Hot dog and a Hamburger". Although that is a interesting metaphor, I would like to see what they describe themselves as musically.

Hopefully, you will check out, get into, or buy some of Wild Flags music. Trust me, this is a band that is "worth it" and you will be glad that you are listening to them.

Music My Mom Likes.

Happy Mothers Day! I thought that I would post some music from my collection that my Mom enjoys. You might think that it is shocking, but then again, you'll be impressed with her selections!

Sonic Youth - Bubblegum. I took my Mom to the Sonic Youth show when they came to Denver last year. She loved it!


David Bowie - The Jean Genie. My Mom loves David Bowie. She didn't hear this song before I started playing it, but now she loves it!


Mika Miko - Turkey Sandwich. I love playing this because she sings along with the song.


Sleater Kinney - Be Yr Momma. Good stuff here. The prefect Mother's Day song.


Siouxsie and the Banshees - Headcut.

Sweet Saturday Six

I pushed the Friday Five to Saturday this week because I finished this post on Saturday instead of Friday. I had some time this week, so I kind of went "in depth" and I featured some new artists that are worth recommending.
PJ Harvey - Let England Shake. I'm really liking these short films for every song on PJ's album.


OOIOO - Uma. I had to include an experimental song this week. Naturally, anything that Yoshimi P is involved in is awesome, so OOIOO isn't an exception.


Black Tambourine - For Ex Lovers Only. Black Tambourine is another band that I was into for a while, but forgot all about. If you are into Shoegaze and Twee pop, you will love Black Tambourine.


Free Kitten - Strawberry Milk.


Scout Niblett - Big Bad Man. If you like old school PJ Harvey or Cat Power, then I recommend Scout Niblett. Her guitar playing is raw, and her music is fresh too.


Siouxsie and the Banshees - Israel. Apparently, this is was written as a Christmas song. Guess I learned something new today.


Classic Sleater-Kinney (kind of).
Nardwuar vs. Sleater-Kinney. I had to show you all this interview; it is just too good to miss. Trust me, the interviewer (Nardwaur) is not an idiot and is accurately pretty smart. He does a good job interviewing.

5 Fun Friday Videos!

Happy Friday everyone. I threw this weeks Friday Five together pretty quickly, but I did finish 2 album reviews and they should be posted by tomorrow.

Tori Amos, Bjork, PJ Harvey and Massive Attack mash-up.This is a pretty cool mix! All of these artists are strong on their own, but they sound even better when put together.


Sonic Youth - Nevermind. Hey look! Thurstons playing a Gibson Les Paul! Most of their stuff was stolen, so that's why. The Picture is kind of messed up on this one. (See Terence and Philip?).


Mika Miko - Wild Bore. I wake up to this song every day. This is an awesome video. I can't jump on a trampliline and play guitar at the same time, this is why its so awesome.

I just went through a break up, so I thought that I would share my top 5 break up songs. These songs are always here for me when people aren't so I thought that this would be a good coping method.

PJ Harvey - Legs. This is the ULTAMATE Break up song. Valentines day song even. Whatever the occasion, this will make you feel better. Fantastic footage.

Frozen Tuesday 5.

Nice to get a post in on a Tuesday, I spent another weekend Debating and because it was a two day meet (Friday and Saturday) I couldn't do my normal posting. I have tomorrow and off because of the bad weather (the wind chill is -22 degrees outside!), so I thought that it would be a good time to post. I sprained my right wrist really bad, so I'm going to keep my comments to a minimum.

Happy Friday my dear readers! I'm happy that it is Friday again, and I'm also happy that I get to share some news regarding the bands in this weeks installment of th Friday Five!

PJ Harvey - Rid of Me on Jay Leno. Where is her band? That really doesn't matter, this is a great performance. Dont' forget to watch the interview!


Extra! PJ Harvey - Let England Shake. This is from her upcoming album "Let England Shake". I can't wait for this to come out. This might be me, but PJ is starting to sound like Fever Ray (just a little bit).

Classic Sleater Kinney - Start Together. According to the video details, this was filmed in '97 or '98. I just want to say that this a really good bootleg; if it isn't a bootleg, then this is a really high quality video. Just watch the camera change at :35 seconds.


If you dont' want to watch Carrie play guitar, why not watch Portlandia? It will make you laugh, cry and might even make you want to visit Portland. The show premieres the 22nd, but you can watch it here. (Again, you didn't hear this from me).

This is a Sleater Kinney "One Beat" Promo poster. When I ordered this, I just thought that I would be the standard SK poster, but when I started to look at it further, I realized that this was an autographed poster! "How could I get an autographed SK poster for 3 Dollars?"  I really couldn't believe that I'd scored another really cool poster for under so cheap! I'm sorry, but in my opinion, this poster is better than the Sonic Youth poster I got for 5 Dollars.

The green box on the upper right of the poster has some song titles that I haven't even heard! I wrote them down (not in order, standard track listing got in the way).

First Friday Five of the New Year!

Happy New Year! I'm quite excited to post the first Five of the Year! I'm planing to do some fun stuff with the Friday Five this year, but I'm going to plan it as I go.

Matson Jones -  N.E.S.F.T.O. I had to up Colorado for once, so here you go. I still need to get this album. I might get it this weekend. (Colorado People, does anything look famaliar?)


PJ Harvey - Hook. I haven't seen this one before. It must be from PJ's To bring you my Love Era. You could totaly tell from the song structure.

The Jesus Lizard- Boilermaker. The Jesus Lizard is all types of awesome. Looks like I have to purchace one of their albums sometime sooon.


Sonic Youth - I'm Not There. This is a pretty good Bob Dylan Cover. Any cover from Sonic Youth is good though.


Cat Power - Ichy Head. Hey look, Chan has on a Bob Dylan shirt.


Classic Sleater Kinney! Far Away. I had to dig really deep in my Youtube favorites list (1,000+ songs) to find this one. It was worth it though. According to the video discription this was taped May 21st 2002 and was "SK's 3rd show back from a 2 year hitatus". One Beat was realeased on August 20th 2002, so this must have been a secret show sort of thing!Check out that solo/bridge section.

Festive Friday Five!

Merry Christmas! (or for those of you who don't celebrate happy winter holiday). I thought that it would be a good idea if I was to give a Christmas gift to all of my readers, so I'd thought that I would share some of the Sleater Kinney B-sides that I accidentally stumbled upon last week. As with all b-sides, they should be on the original albums. Enjoy these, and have a wonderful holiday!

What if I was right. I want to say that this might be a non album b-side, but it was released on a long gone compilation album. This one has some pretty solid guitar - drum work in it.


Everything (Album Version) From The Woods DVD. This "should be" the last song on The Woods. I think that they should have kept it on there because it makes the album "complete". If you want to buy it, it is available to download on iTunes. Check out the Live version too.


Maraca. I think this is about drunk driving or a car crash.


Lions and Tigers. Corrin wrote this for her kid, so that explains when it is lyricly simple, but it is a very cute song.
